PNG stores photographs faithfully and enormously; JPEG stores them at a fraction of the size with a loss most eyes will not find. For a screenshot of a photo, or a camera image someone saved as PNG, the saving is often ten times over.
JPEG cannot be transparent, so anything see-through in the PNG has to become a colour. It is filled with white by default, and you can switch it to black — worth checking on a logo before you save, because transparency turning white is where this conversion usually goes wrong.
Dimensions and orientation come across unchanged. If the PNG is a screenshot of text or an interface, compare the two before saving: JPEG spends its bytes on smooth gradients and smears the hard edges a screenshot is mostly made of, which is the one case where the smaller file looks obviously worse.

Questions
What happens to transparent areas?
They are filled with a solid colour — white unless you pick black — because JPEG has no transparency at all.
Will the image lose quality?
Some, and you choose how much with the quality slider. At 80% the difference is very hard to see on a photograph.
Should I keep PNG for anything?
Yes: logos, icons, screenshots of text and anything transparent. JPEG smears sharp edges and flat colour, which is exactly what those are made of.
